The Center for Women's Oncology
The Gynecologic Oncology Program provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary evaluation, treatment and follow-up of patients with suspected or proven pre-invasive or invasive gynecologic malignancies, including ovarian, uterine, cervical, vulvar, vaginal and trophoblastic cancers. Our combined resources enable patients who are suspected or known to have gynecologic cancer – and those who are at high risk – to receive the latest diagnostic tests and treatments available and access to the most up-to-date research information. The program’s specialized interdisciplinary team consists of physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, technicians, social workers, pharmacists, clinical trial coordinators, case managers and administrative assistants who support the patient-physician relationship. The Gynecologic Oncology Program holds weekly conferences to discuss cases where different specialists' feedback can be obtained and the next steps for patient care are discussed. This type of interdisciplinary approach leads to highly coordinated, expert, quality patient care and superior patient satisfaction.

The Gynecologic Oncology Program also works closely with Moffitt's Lifetime Cancer Screening High-Risk Clinic to serve women concerned about their risk for a variety of cancers, including ovarian cancer. The program collaborates with members of the Psychosocial and Palliative Care Program, which provides emotional support for patients and their families, and referrals to other Moffitt and community resources.
About Gynecologic Cancers
Gynecologic malignancies represent a diverse group of diseases that includes cancers of the uterus, ovary, cervix, vulva, vagina, fallopian tube and gestational trophoblast. Due to the heterogeneous nature of these diseases, some of which are rare, specialized interdisciplinary care is important. To determine the best course of therapy, patients meet with an interdisciplinary team that includes specialists in Gynecologic Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology. In all cases, patients should be seen at the earliest date possible. This allows the physician to provide the widest variety of treatment options. In addition to treating the cancer, the goal of the Gynecologic Oncology Program is to address and treat the full spectrum of factors affecting the patient, including psychosocial and sexual issues.
Translational and Clinical Research
As a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated comprehensive cancer center, Moffitt Cancer Center is committed to improving cancer treatments and the quality of life for patients with gynecologic cancer. Clinicians and scientists collaborate to discover more effective therapies for gynecologic cancer. “Translational research” brings new knowledge and treatments from the laboratory to the patient’s bedside as quickly as possible. In addition to its own research programs, Moffitt Cancer Center participates in many regional and national cancer treatment studies, including those offered by the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG). The Gynecologic Oncology Program at Moffitt Cancer Center is the site of the principal investigative body of the Tampa Bay Cancer Consortium, an organization of several hospitals and universities involved in GOG research.
