Head and Neck Program

Treatment

  • Therapeutic and Reconstructive Surgery:   Therapeutic and reconstructive surgery is planned for each procedure to effect maximum rehabilitation. Voice-sparing operations for laryngeal and pharyngeal cancers are performed for eligible patients. Transoral laser microsurgery is used for removal of early invasive tumors to minimize morbidity.
  • Head and Neck Microvascular Free-Tissue Reconstruction
  • Speech and Swallowing Rehabilitation
  • Psychosocial and Pain Management Consultation
  • Advanced Endoscopic Sinus and Skull Base Surgery, which utilizes Brain LAB image guidance for sinus and skull based tumors.
  • Radiation Oncology:  The radiation oncologist determines whether there is a role for adjuvant or curative radiotherapy. Traditional external beam radiotherapy, IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) and brachytherapy may be combined with chemotherapy to increase the treatment's effect.
  • Chemotherapy:  Chemotherapy protocols are available to assist in the management of patients with advanced cancers and to assess the added effect of chemotherapy with radiation and/or surgery.
  • Skull Base Surgery:   An integrated team of surgeons and other medical personnel perform surgical procedures on tumors invading the skull base. This team consists of a neurosurgeon, head and neck surgeon, medical oncologist and radiation oncologist. Techniques used include intraoperative image-guided surgery and monitoring of nerve function to minimize risks to vital neuro-vascular structures of the skull base.

  • Maxillofacial Prosthodontist:   A maxillofacial prosthodontist provides a variety of intraoral, ocular, nasal, ear, dental and facial prostheses and dental implants designed to help the patient return to normal function. A maxillofacial prosthodontist receives postdoctoral training in reconstruction of the dentition and supporting structures, and is a specialist in the design of prostheses that are used in the mouth, eye, nose, ear and dental facial area. This includes the design of dental implants, which assist the patient in returning to normal functions and provides a more normal cosmetic appearance to the face structure. Swallowing prostheses are also designed by the maxillofacial prosthodontist and are used to assist the patient in restoration of the swallowing function.
