Head and Neck Program

Research and Clinical Trials

Because Moffitt is a university-based facility, clinicians and basic science researchers work together to discover new treatments and cures for head and neck cancers. This "translational" approach to research brings together the best in research from both clinical and laboratory perspectives. Members of the Head and Neck Program participate in national, regional and industry-based clinical trials. These are research studies that test new approaches to the treatment and prevention of diseases in people. Clinical trials are required for all new treatments before they can be used in patients as standard therapy. Current clinical trials offered through the Head and Neck Program include:

  • Phase II and III trials for advanced metastatic or recurrent cancers of the head and neck of squamous cell origin
  • The latest chemotherapy trials including taxol, taxotere and Erbitux
  • Radiation, re-irradiation and chemoradiation protocols for patients with non-surgical options in treating their tumors
  • Early postoperative chemotherapy followed by radiation therapy in combination with chemotherapy in patients with resected high-risk squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.
